Embark on a Unique Journey Through the Panamanian Rainforest

Join us on an extraordinary journey as we navigate the Miguel de la Borda river, crossing its gentle currents on a one-of-a-kind "ferry" crafted from a wooden platform lashed to 55-gallon barrels. This unconventional mode of transportation, powered by two river kayaks with outboard motors, showcases the ingenuity and determination required to reach our secluded off-grid paradise nestled in the heart of the pristine Panamanian rainforest.

Unveiling the Highlights: Journey from Miguel de la Borda to Camaroncito

Our adventurous escapade commences with the charismatic "La Cabrita" (The Little Goat), our beloved Jeep that carried us through the thrilling two-day journey from Miguel de la Borda to the enchanting haven of Camaroncito. Join us as we unfold the highlights of this captivating journey through a video series that captures the breathtaking beauty of our surroundings.

This journey is part of a larger effort through a not-for-profit project we run called Por Panama https://www.porpanama.net/en

The Project That Will Help Change the Lives of Thousands of Panamanians

Costa Abajo de Colon is A Forgotten Region

Imagine being cut off from the world, depending on fishing boats and outboard motors and fine weather to reach civilization. While this has allowed the region to stay pristine, and free of development, it has come with a price to the people

Connecting Costa Abajo: Off-Grid Adventures in the Panamanian Rainforest

More than 10,000 people in the Costa Abajo area of the Colón province on the Caribbean coast of Panama, including children and the elderly, have been living without basic amenities—no road, electricity, clean water, cell service, or access to medical care. In 2021, we initiated the first cut of a 30 km dirt road, a colossal project driven by the will and determination of local residents to end years of neglect by national authorities.

A Sustainable Oasis in the Heart of the Rainforest

Ernesto Berrocal and Sarah Bajc, owners of Camaroncito EcoResort and Beach, have invested time, money, and willpower to be part of the organizing committee of this vital project. With education and capital resources, they've built an Eco-Lux haven in the middle of this forgotten paradise, offering fully sustainable amenities. Camaroncito EcoResort shares skills in solar power, water filtration, high-speed internet, business management, social media marketing, and permaculture farming techniques with the local community.

Fostering Accessibility and Progress: A Commitment to Costa Abajo

At Camaroncito EcoResort, we are profoundly committed to fostering accessibility and progress within our local community. Before the establishment of our road, over 10,000 inhabitants along this 30-kilometer stretch of rainforest relied solely on outboard motor boats or navigated perilous winding pathways. Our collaborative efforts, initiated with a preliminary road cut in early 2021, solidified our dedication to connecting Costa Abajo.

The Grand Adventure: Journey to Camaroncito

On the morning of February 23, 2022, our grand adventure to bring our own wheels to Camaroncito commenced, culminating in the afternoon of February 24. Accompanied by a resilient team of three, we braved the challenging terrain in a robust 2000 Jeep Wrangler 4x4, fueled by sheer determination and a shared vision of progress.
